Suntory Tomi-no-Oka Winery

Above photo is a part of the vineyard at Suntory Tomi-no-Oka winery.  I took part in the guided field trip.  Unfortunatelly the weather was very bad because of approaching the typhoon, I could see the vineyard under a viticulturist, Mr. Yoneda's guidance.  I could understand the passion and sustained efforts to make good grapes.

"Bettara Fair" at Takarada-Ebisu Shrine 宝田恵比寿神社のべったら市

One "Bettara-zuke" (a kind of Japanese radish pickles) was about 2,000 yen.  Too expensive!  I feel ripped off.

Shusse Jizo in Ginza

2010_10160004

Shusse Jizo (銀座出世地蔵尊) and Mimeguri Shrine (三囲神社;the rightmost of the above photo) are on the 9th floor of Ginza Mitsukoshi department store.
Mimeguri Shrine is dedicated to the God of the Mitsui family (founders of Mitsukoshi). The main shrine of it is near to Mukojima Kototoi bridge.

Shusse Jizo is said to be unearthed in this area about 140 years ago.  It has been placed here since 1968.  It symbolizes luck, success in life, long life and prosperity in business.

I bought a hand-carved wooden "Netsuke (根付)" of this Jizo.  It has a gentle face, indeed.

Exhibition and live performance of calligraphy art

I went to Tennouji Temple at Yanaka to see the exhibition, "The Second Stage" by the calligraphy art group, "Ten-you-gumi" (天遊組)"Ten-you" (天遊), the group leader, is a calligraphy artist.  She draws ancient characters in her original way.

↑One of the "Ten-you-gumi" work, titled "天".  This work consists of 3 ancient characters, 星(=star; left below), 虹(=rainbow; center), and 日 (=sun, day; top right)

When I reached there, the live performance was about to begin.  First, the group members drew straight lines and basic figures.

Then, Ten-you's performance began.  It was a live session of calligraphy and Japanese traditional music.  Ten-you wrote ancient characters extempore, collaborating with "tsuzumi" performance.

After the performance, she explained that the sound of "tsuzumi" inspired her to write 4 characters, "雷" (thunder) , "光" (light)、"恵" (blessing) and "風" (wind).

Especially white hagi seemed to be at their best.

"Hagi" festival in Mukoujima Hyakkaen Garden (向島百花園) has already been over. But this year, we can still (at last?) enjoy the tunnel of "hagi".

It's unseasonably hot in the daytime today. But fragrant olives scented here and there on the way home. Autumn is surely coming.
